Strength
As we get older our life experiences give us strength, mentally. However we often need to work more on our physical strength so our body and mind works optimally so we can enjoy our golden years.
Muscle mass and bone density often declines as we get older but they can be increased again with the right nutrition and activities. As a result this supports our brain function, warding off dementia, and keeping us on our feet, preventing falls.
With Seniors Week soon, this month's challlenge is building on protein foods in your day to support both physical and mental strength. We would love to hear from you, share how you have bumped up the protein in your day in our Bright Bods Facebook Group!

Recipe of the Month
Wontons
I finally bought and then found Nutolene, Vegie Delight's brand, after I have had several clients talk about it with me recently. It is just a blended peanut type paste but with some added minerals as a plant based meat alternative. So if you like peanuts and want a plant based alternative I highly recommend giving it a try.
Serves 10
Ingredients
Wonton pastry:
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup water, or more as needed
- 2 cups four
- 1/2 teaspooonn salt
- extra water in a cup to brush the pastry
Filling
- 1/2 can Nutolene
- 1 cup cooked lentils
- 1 Carrot- grated
- 1 zucchini- grated
- 1 celery stalk finely diced
- 1/2 cup cabbage or bok choy, finely sliced and diced
- 2 shallotts or garlic chives
- 1 clove garlic, finely chopped or minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1tb sesame oil
Method
- Chop up all ingredients. In a medium pan on medium heat, add the sesame oil and saute the garlic.
- Once fragrant add the carrot and stir for a couple of minutes. Then add the zucchini and celery and stir for a couple of minutes. Then add the cabbage/bok choy and shallott/garlic chives. Stir for another couple of minutes until soft.
- In a large bowl, mix the lentils, nutolene, vegetables and season with salt and pepper.
- For the pastry, in a medium bowl, beat the egg and mix in 1/3 cup water.
- In a large bowl combine the flour and salt.
- Create a well in the centre of the flour and slowly pour the egg and water in.
-
Mix well. If the mixture is too dry, add more water, 1 teaspoon at a time until a pliable dough has formed.
-
Cut the dough into two balls and cover the dough balls with a damp tea towel for 10 minutes.
-
Whilst you wait, place a pot of water on the stove wiith the lid on to heat up to boiling point.
-
After at least 10 minutes, cut each dough ball into four equal pieces.Keep the dough you are not working with under the damp tea towel. If it is a hot day you may like to store in the fridge.
-
Dust flour on your workspace, hands and rolling pin and roll the dough out forming a large square 1.5mm thick as best you can.
-
Cut into 8cm squares.Reuse any leftover dough into the next batch of wonton wrappers.
-
Place 1 tablespoon of mixture into the wonton wrappers.
- Brush water around the edges
-
Pinch the opposite 2 corners together over the mixture. Try to squeeze out the air when forming the wontons.
-
Pinch the other 2 corners together, forming a pyramid. Then, pinch the sides together to preventthe filling coming out.
-
When the water is boiling, add the wontons and cook for 2 minutes.
-
Take out of the pan with a slotted spoon and serve with your favourite sauce: satay, sweet chilli, sweet and sour, soy and sriracha.
